Housekeeping is everyone’s responsibility. While it may seem like a simple task, maintaining a clean and organized work area prevents injuries, protects equipment, and ensures regulatory compliance. Just a few minutes each day can make a significant difference.
WHY IT MATTERS
Poor housekeeping and lack of inspection can lead to:
Slips, trips, and falls
Injuries from using incorrect or damaged tools
Fires caused by improper storage of flammable or combustible materials
Equipment damage and mechanical failures
Regulatory violations and fines
Housekeeping goes beyond picking up trash — it includes your entire work environment.
DURING YOUR DAILY ROUNDS, ASK YOURSELF:
Are extension cords and hoses secured and out of walkways?
Are tools and materials properly stored between uses?
Are access and egress paths clear?
Are there any leaks, spills, or housekeeping hazards?
Are there electrical, structural, or mechanical issues?
If you identify an issue that cannot be corrected immediately:
Document it
Report it promptly
Ensure it receives proper attention in a timely manner
Depending on severity, regulations may require immediate repair. In some cases, you may need to exercise Stop Work Authority (SWA) to control the area until it is safe.
TAKE ACTION
Before and after every shift, take a few minutes to inspect your workspace. These small efforts can prevent life-changing injuries and costly compliance issues.
